Texas County to Give UBI to Illegals

We noted yesterday that the state of Minnesota plans to offer free college educations to illegal migrants. Not to be outdone in the illegal giveaway department is Harris County, Texas, home of the city of Houston, the third largest county in America, bigger than five whole states, and with a population larger than 14. This mega-county is angling to provide illegals with guaranteed annual incomes.

The chief executive of Harris County, county judge Lina Hidalgo, claimed during a hearing yesterday that illegals living in the county could qualify for a new pilot program that will distribute a Universal Basic Income (UBI) to low-income residents. The program, dubbed “Uplift Harris,” is set to begin in September and will pay $500 monthly to approximately 1,500 families for 18 months. It resembles other UBI programs being deployed in Democrat-run states and municipalities throughout the country. Hidalgo justified the move by saying:

It is uncivilized that we live in a society where people cannot afford basic necessities. As county leaders, we have a duty to employ all the tools that we can to reduce poverty. This pilot program will support the people that work incredibly hard day and night but still need an uplift.

Two responses come to mind. One, it used to be assumed that illegal aliens could not legally work, “incredibly hard day and night” or otherwise.  That now seems to have gone by the boards along with every other immigration law. And two, regardless if they are currently working, it’s generally theorized that the predominantly low-skilled migrant population of this country will soon be put out of work permanently by the AI and robotics revolution. In that case, they, along with a lot of Americans, are going to need not an uplift, but total support.

So why are they being admitted in the first place?

Incidentally, Ms. Hidalgo is a native of Colombia and on Twitter calls herself a “proud immigrant.”
