The Biden Administration has extended Temporary Protected (TPS) Status to Haitians living in the U.S. More than 100,000 may be covered by the extension. TPS is supposed to provide refuge to foreigners in the U.S. who cannot go home safely because of natural disasters and other problems in their homelands.
The program is supposed to be temporary, but in practice it has become a form of amnesty which provides permanent residence. Many of the Haitians initially got TPS because of the earthquake that struck Haiti eleven years ago.
