Border Patrol Busy in California

The El Centro border sector in California’s Imperial Valley is heating up. Within a 24-hour period last week, Border Patrol agents interdicted three separate human smuggling attempts.

  • On the evening of May 19, agents patrolling the Interstate 8 area near the border stopped and searched a GMC Sierra cargo van and found 14 migrants locked inside. They expelled the migrants to Mexico under Title 42 coronavirus protocols and charged the 55-year-old driver with human smuggling.
  • The next day agents at the Highway 86 interior immigration checkpoint inspected a utility cargo box truck, finding nine illegal migrants inside the cargo compartment and a tenth in the passenger seat in the cab. The driver,  a 21-year-old, male U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with human smuggling. The 10 illegals were expelled under Title 42.
  • Finally, just an hour and a half later agents stopped a Kia Rondo minivan on Highway 98 about 14 miles west of Calexico, California. They found two migrants locked inside a hidden compartment. The driver–a 38-year-old U.S. citizen–and the two migrants were transported to the El Centro Sector Processing Center.

In all, that made three human smuggling attempts interdicted in less than 24 hours. Twenty-six migrants were prevented from disappearing into America and, thanks to Title 42, most were sent back to Mexico, this time. No doubt they’ll be seen again, however.
