Better Late Than Never for NYC

Since the 1980s New York City has been a sanctuary for illegal aliens, with the city limiting cooperation with federal immigration law enforcement. In recent years this policy has contributed to a surge of illegal aliens settling in NYC, at considerable cost to the city’s taxpayers. Recently, New Yorkers were outraged by a video showing migrants attacking police officers.

Throughout this surge New York City’s leading politicians have shied away from criticizing the sanctuary policy and linking it to its consequences. That changed this week when Mayor Eric Adams expressed his “fundamental disagreement” with sanctuary ordinances.

He stated, “We should be communicating with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], and if ICE makes the determination of deporting [illegal aliens], then they should. The mere fact that we cannot share with ICE that [a] person has committed three robberies, that [a] person is part of an organized gang crew, the mere fact that we can’t say that or communicate that, that’s problematic for me.”

It’s sad that it’s taken so long for this awareness to dawn on the city. But–as the old saying goes–better late than never.
