As reported here last month, the government of Mexico earlier this year was assisting in trying to tamp down illegal border crossing into the US by rounding up migrants in northern border cities and removing them either to the south or completely out of the country.
Combined with the traditional wintertime ebb in illegal crossings, Mexico’s efforts for a while seemed to bear fruit. Illegal migrant encounters were down in January (125,000) , but in February they rose again (142,000). Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), warned on Sunday that the “flow of migrants will continue” unless the United States obeys his demands. Among those demands are:
- The US must send $20 billion a year to Latin America countries
- It must lift sanctions on Venezuela
- It must end the Cuban embargo, and
- It must legalize millions of Mexicans currently living in the U.S.
Now that election year has arrived, the American public’s unprecedented concern with illegal immigration has finally seeped into Joe Biden’s befuddled brain. He may be more than happy to grant AMLO’s demands, but any migrant-suppression efforts by Mexico are sure to be in Mexico’s interests only and be way too little and way too late.
