Iowa Bill Aims at Illegals

Iowa’s Legislature approved a bill to make illegal immigration as a state crime. It would codify illegal residence in Iowa as a criminal misdemeanor. State courts could order deportations of people convicted of this crime, and law enforcement would have authority to make sure that they leave.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to sign the measure. This bill is similar to S.B. 4, the border control legislation passed by Texas. State Rep. Steven Holt, floor manager for the Iowa bill, explained why he supported it: “The status quo of federal government failure is unsustainable. I believe that in order to protect our communities and our state, we must push the envelope. And that is what this legislation does.”
