The Real Bob Goodlatte Stands Up

“We are going to continue to try to make sure that we do immigration reform, because it’s important that we do it . . . .” – Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Univision, May 2, 2014

The old TV show “What’s My Line” had three contestants who all claimed to be one person, and a panel of questioners tried to guess which one was actually that person. After the guesses were made, the show host would declare: “Will the real so and so please stand up.”

For the past couple of years, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, head of the House Judiciary Committee, has been playing a version of “What’s my line?” One of his lines, commonly for constituents, was that he was totally opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens. But on other occasions, he has indicated that he wants to bring illegal aliens “out of the shadows” and make them legal residents.

Finally, it seems that the real Congressman Goodlatte has stood up, and his true line is amnesty. Recently, Goodlatte was interviewed on the Univision Spanish-language network. The interviewer was Jorge Ramos, whose book The Latino Wave laid out the Hispanic supremacist agenda of using immigration, legal and illegal, to increase Hispanic power in the U.S.

In a more or less deferential manner toward Ramos, Goodlatte affirmed his support for “immigration reform,” the bogus buzz-phrase amnesty advocates use to describe amnesty. And just to make sure his statement was clear, the congressman added that “the grand bargain is that we find [legal] status for many of the people who are already here.”

Most interestingly he added, that this would be a good way “to deal with the people who are unlawfully here, who have been law-abiding citizens.” Perhaps when the congressman stood up for amnesty, he did so too quickly which may have made him dizzy. It’s hard to imagine how else he could claim that foreign lawbreakers in the U.S. not only are law-abiding, but citizens as well.

To his credit, however, Goodlatte at least stated that amnesty should not go through until there is at least some assurance that effective immigration law enforcement is in place. He noted that this is definitely not the case now with the Obama Administration systematically sabotaging enforcement.

Nevertheless, one might ask Goodlatte the following question. If we truly had effective immigration law enforcement, why would we need to think about giving amnesty? If resident illegal aliens could no longer have jobs and benefits, most of them eventually would practice “self-deportation” by going home on their own. It really would be nice if the congressman would stand up and give an answer.
