US Foreign-Born Population Highest Ever

The Center for Immigration Studies has looked at currrent Census figures and issued a new analysis. Among other findings, their analysis reveals the following:

  • The total foreign-born population (legal and illegal) of the US reached a new record high of 51.4 million in February 2024 — an increase of 6.4 million since President Biden took office and surpassing all former records. The foreign-born population has increased under Biden by 172,000 every month.
  • The foreign-born share of the U.S. population has more than tripled since 1970, nearly doubled since 1990, and is up 40 percent just since 2000.
  • Growth in the foreign-born population is being driven primarily by immigration from Latin America. Immigration from India is up 819,000; from the Middle East, up 654,000.
  • At current rates, the foreign-born population would reach nearly 60 million and 17.5 percent of the U.S. population by the end of a second Biden term — both figures would be unprecedented in American history.
  • More than half (3.7 million) of the 6.4 million increase in the foreign-born population since January 2021 is due to illegal immigration.
