The Trump Administration has declared a new policy which allows states and localities opt out of refugee resettlement programs. In the past these programs have allowed refugee related “charities” to settle refugees where they pleased. These “charities” received federal subsidies for the resettlement while the states and localities had to pick up the tab of providing public assistance for the refugees.
Some governors have announced, however, that their states will continue to participate in resettlement. One of them is Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee. In response to his decision, 31 counties in the state have declared that they will not participate in refugee resettlement,
