Suspension for Saying ‘Illegal Alien’

A high school in North Carolina suspended a student for using the term “illegal alien.” According to his mother, Leah McGee, an English teacher asked his class to use some vocabulary words, one of which was “alien.” The student then asked if the teacher meant “like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?”

Another student said that he was offended by hearing the term “illegal alien,” even though the student was simply asking a question about it. School officials acted by suspending the student for three days because he had expressed “racism.” They didn’t seem to understand that “illegal alien” is a legal category, not a race.
