New York City has passed a law making it illegal for New Yorkers to refer to illegal aliens as “illegal aliens”–if the person expressing the term is motivated by “hate.” Violations are punishable with fines up to $250,000.
The authors of the law didn’t explain how authorities can read minds in order to discern motives, or how such a law squares with our country’s First Amendment guarantee of free speech.
