Migrant Border Crossings Rise

Typically during January and February, the number of migrants illegally crossing our southern border declines. That has been the case so far this year, with the Border Patrol reporting that in January, a total of “only” 124,220 illegal migrants were encountered between ports of entry, a reduction of more than 50 percent from the 249,735 migrant encounters in December. Migrant encounters, like the inflation rate, have been so ridiculously high during the Biden administration that any percentage drop — even if in absolute numbers the situation remains dire — looks like improvement.

It appears that even that illusory improvement is to be short-lived. Just as spring and warmer weather follow winter, the illegal migrant numbers are rising again. The CBP told Fox News this morning that total migrant encounters surpassed 21,000 over just the past three days, averaging 7,000-plus per day.

Interestingly, it does appear that the migrant-frustrating efforts by Gov. Abbott of Texas — which the White House has fought tooth and nail — have caused a pivot away from the Lone Star State to Arizona and California. For example, the current busiest single sector — Tucson, Arizona– saw more than 5,400 encounters from Friday through Sunday, while the San Diego sector, the second busiest, witnessed more than 3,600.

As for Texas, last week Joe Biden found a spot to visit on the border — the carefully selected calm and sedate Brownsville area– where nary a migrant showed his head throughout the royal demento’s afternoon stay. Crisis? What crisis?
