Hungary’s Orbán: “Migrant Armies Are Banging on Europe’s Doors”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary, speaking to Kossuth Radio on June 11, labeled this the “age of epidemics and migration,” and said that “migrant armies are hammering on Europe’s doors.” He pointed out that while last year roughly 10,000 illegal border-crossing attempts were intercepted along Hungary’s southern border fence, this year the number is expected to reach 38,000, nearly four times as many. He continued:

The Hungarian government’s view is that migration is inherently wrong from a philosophical point of view, and that there’s no good migration, but only bad migration. Migration is always about people being born somewhere according to God’s order, and not being able to prosper in the place where they were born. And they decide that since they can’t achieve the life they want for themselves there, they pack up and leave. They may have to flee, or they may simply be looking for another place to live for economic reasons. This isn’t good. What is good is for everyone to be able to prosper in the place where they were born. I’d now say that we must not only reject illegal migration. . . . I’d suggest that for two years, let’s say, we should refuse to allow not only illegal migration, but any migration at all.

In discussing Orbán’s comments, Breitbart News points out that “illegal immigration pressures are not only increasing along the European Union’s land borders, but also at sea, with migrant ‘taxi’ ships operated by non-government organisations.” Spain’s Canary Islands,” Breitbart observes, “have . . .been inundated with thousands of illegal migrants arriving by sea.”

Hungary’s efforts so far in combatting the invasion have angered its partners in the European Union. For example, in December the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that  Orbán’s government had violated the rules by denying entry to migrants at the border with Serbia. In January, the European Commission announced that it would send a letter to the country to “demand an explanation.”

In reply, Hungarian Secretary of State for International Communication and Relations Zoltán Kovács said: “Hungary is not going to give in to pressure from pro-migration forces. We’ll continue to defend the Hungarian people, and the country’s — and EU’s — borders.”
