An illegal from Mexico who killed a cop while driving the wrong way on an Arizona freeway Monday had a blood-alcohol level almost 3 times the legal limit. Raul Silva Corona had driven 35 miles in the wrong direction in the wee hours of Monday morning before he killed Mesa Police Officer Brandon Mendoza, a 13-year veteran of the force driving home from work.
This was not the first time Corona had broken the law. The AP noted that in 1994 Corona plead guilty to a criminal conspiracy charge in Colorado, and prosecutors dismissed other charges of burglary, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident. Not surprisingly, despite clear law that even legal immigrants are subject to deportation for criminal behavior, Corona was free to continue to live and break the laws of the U.S. – until he died in the crash.
