Border Captures Suggest Increased Security Threat

Fiscal Year 2024 began on October 1. In just that time, slightly over a fortnight, the Border Patrol has encountered: “more than 30 Iranians, nearly 60 Syrians, 35 Pakistanis, more than 100 Russians, 285 Afghans and nearly 2,000 Chinese migrants” at the southern border.

In the CBP’s recently released “2024 Homeland Threat Assessment,” the agency says migrants seeking entry to the United States are arriving at a rate that will “nearly match 2022 total encounters. As part of this increase, we have encountered growing numbers of individuals in the Terrorist Screening Data Set (TSDS), also known as the ‘watchlist.’” During the entire 2023 Fiscal Year, a total of 151 such watchlist hits were recorded. As usual, the agency neglected to reveal whether or not those persons were admitted.

Among suspicious foreigners apprehended since October 1, four “special interest” Iranians were captured, two of whom were on the watchlist.

Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza and the inevitable outflux of “refugees” from that region — some of whom will undoubtedly be members or supporters of Hamas — will pose a continuing threat, given our porous borders. Some Republicans, including presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, are urging that no Palestinians be admitted. At least one Democrat — Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) — has called for their acceptance.
