Biden Weakens ‘Public Charge’

The Trump Administration tried to expand the “Public Charge” rule in immigration which denies legal residence to noncitizens if they take welfare and other forms of public assistance. A federal court last year overturned Trump’s changes, and the Biden Administration recently loosened the remaining restrictions on noncitizens getting tax-paid benefits.

Allen Orr, a past president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, endorsed the latter move. He stated, “We are excited and welcome to see the new rule from the Biden Administration updating the barbaric weaponizing of public charge used by the former administration. This allows our borders to remain open to a large portion of the world where immigrants struggle and seek the American dream.”
