2,000-Member Caravan Sets Out

A caravan of 2,000 migrants, calling themselves the “Way of the Cross” caravan, has left Chiapas in southern Mexico and is headed north. Organizers have said the group was headed to Mexico City, but participants along the way have been heard to shout, “A la frontera!” (To the border!) While organizers agree that some in the caravan may end up in other border cities, such as Tijuana or Matamoros, most are expected to aim for Juarez, opposite El Paso, Texas.

The migrants are being assisted along the way by non-governmental organizations, many of them religious. At the end — in Juarez and, if they are lucky, El Paso — the Catholic Church is preparing to facilitate their entry into America has efficiently as possible.

Meanwhile, the State of Texas is making preparations for more or less the opposite. The Texas National Guard has deployed to El Paso two airplanes carrying 200 members of the Tactical Border Force, a group that specializes in incidents of civil disobedience. (Note that it was just last week that a group of migrants stormed the border in El Paso and injured Border Patrol agents in the process. Texas authorities have since charged nine migrants involved in that incident.)

The caravan is expected to reach Juarez/El Paso in a few days.
