17 Migrants Jailed on Texas State Charges

Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned in June that Texas authorities would begin arresting and jailing illegal migrants crossing the border into his state under state law. At that time, Abbott said: “If you come to Texas, you’re subject to being arrested. You’re not going to have a pathway to roam the country. You’re going to have a pathway directly into a jail cell.”

Now, at last, it has begun to happen–on a very small scale, granted, but at least some level of government is doing something to enforce the law.

Earlier this week, the sheriff of Kinney County, Texas, located on the border and about 100 miles west of San Antonio, posted images of 17 migrants, dressed in all-white jail uniforms, who had been booked in the county jail after illegally crossing the border from Mexico.

Abbott, who calls his policy “Catch and Jail,” tweeted the photo above, saying, “The Texas Dept. of Public Safety continues to arrest illegal migrants coming across the border and sending them to jail. Here is an example from this morning with ⁦@TxDPS working with the Kinney County Sheriff’s Office.”
