Surge at Sea: “Third Border” Opens

Joe Biden has not only thrown open our national borders, north and south, increasingly he has opened a “third border”: the maritime border between our Atlantic coastline and the island nations of the Caribbean. On Tuesday night, officers of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a fishing boat off the Florida coast filled with two dozen illegal aliens from Haiti.

This incident is only the latest in a series of migrant apprehensions at sea and in coastal areas north and south. They have been increasing in frequency throughout the Biden administration.

A February 21 piece for Breitbart News by Tom Homan, former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Trump administration, describes Biden’s puzzling Caribbean policy. Homan writes:

Biden has thrown the “third border” wide open between the U.S. and the Caribbean. Not only does his Administration have no intention of closing it, but they’re showering crony Caribbean nations with political gifts and taxpayer dollars. In turn, those islands are now bustling transfer stations for illegal migrants, gangs, drugs and human trafficking heading back to our country.

He goes on to describe the case of the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s island neighbor, whose coast is only 80 miles from Puerto Rico. Border officials call the area “prime territory for drug runners and human smugglers” of illegal immigrants.

While some of the drugs and illegals come by boat, others use the commercial airlines to traffic between the DR and New York, New Jersey, and other Northern cities and states.

The smugglers, Homan says, have found ways to exploit the administration’s lax border protection policies and have thereby set up strongholds in the Northeastern U.S., where they are said to dominate wholesale distribution of heroin and fentanyl.  Meanwhile, Washington seems to have adopted a schizophrenic attitude toward the DR. On the one hand, the State Department has downgraded the DR’s standing vis-a-vis human trafficking, but on the other, it has given that government more than $100 million during Biden’s tenure. Homan concludes:

The Biden Administration’s coddling of the Dominican government has gotten us nothing, aside from more cocaine, fentanyl, gangs and illegal immigrants on American streets. When officials at the highest levels of our government create the border crisis, then go easy on countries that contribute to the problems, it is American citizens who ultimately suffer.
