Surge at Sea: 309 Haitians Intercepted

On January 26, the U.S. Coast Guard captured a migrant boat off the Florida coast overloaded with 309 Haitians. The “less than seaworthy” craft was packed so tightly with men, women, and children that it allowed little more than standing room only, judging by photographs taken at the time. The boat joined what has become a sort of ongoing armada, which has been underway and increasing for the past three years. Since the beginning of the current fiscal year in October, the Guard has intercepted a total of 2,513 illegal Haitian migrants on various kinds of boats.

Illegal migrants encountered on the high seas are typically returned to their home countries. A Coast Guard official said that these migrants were taken on board various CG cutters where they were supplied with food, water, shelter and basic medical attention. Afterwards, they were taken back to Haiti.

No doubt to try again.
