Senate Dems Want to Nix Mayorkas Trial

When the House votes to impeach an individual, it is customary for the Senate to hold a trial to decide whether to convict that person. The House has voted to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for sabotaging immigration law enforcement. But Senate Democrats led by Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) want to avoid a trial and dismiss the charges against Mayorkas as quickly as possible.

Sen. John Thune, (R-SD), the Senate Minority Whip, took issue with this agenda. He stated:

“[I] think the Senate ought to examine the evidence, ought to consider the merits of the arguments made by the House. . . . The Senate needs to have time to process and debate the articles of impeachment coming over from the House, and it’s pretty clear that [Sen.] Chuck Schumer wants to just shut it down immediately. We believe this issue, the southern border, which is basically the subject of the articles of impeachment, is a national security crisis.”
