A new report from the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General says 89.7 million W-2s were submitted in the ten years 2003-2012 where the name and Social Security Number (“SSN”) do not match. “We remain concerned about SSN misuse by noncitizens who are not authorized to work in the United States as well as the misuse of SSNs for identity theft purposes,” the IG says in the report.
Nearly fifteen years ago, the IG issued a report warning that the number of these mismatch reports was growing and attributed a major portion to illegal aliens. In Tax Year 2012 alone, $71 billion in wages were in this category.
