Massachusetts: Where the Open Door Is Your Own

We discussed this last July in “Brother, Can You Spare a Room?” The state of Massachusetts, which has a law on the books guaranteeing free shelter to anyone within its borders, had run out of shelter space and was asking homeowners to open their doors to newly arrived illegal migrants.

The shelters, unsurprisingly, are still full, and again the call has gone out for citizens to open up for the illegals. This time, the appeal has been directed to Boston’s tawny suburbs. On Monday, Boston City Councilwoman Julia Mejia, a Democrat, issued the following plea:

Dedham, Wellesley, Brookline – cities and towns that have so much more resources than the city of Boston. People who actually have more financial support. We need to do everything in our power to make sure that we are setting them up for success, or whatever success looks like. I think everybody should be opening their doors because this is a shared responsibility.

While most in those heavily liberal enclaves are staying away from that opportunity in droves, a few residents have come forward to volunteer. One Brookline woman admitted a Haitian family of three and was happy to relate her experience thus far. She gushed:

It’s a delight, and it’s really fun having them. What I realized is there’s so much prejudice against refugees*, mostly because people don’t know them. They are hardworking, they want to learn, they want to be successful, and I feel great helping. And I get to understand the refugee crisis from the inside.

One added benefit that the Brookline hostess says she has discovered is that her new tenants are willing to cook and do housework for free! “It’s like having your own personal chef!” she exclaims.

The giddy discovery of such “unexpected” surprises — that you can secure servants without having to pay them — has prompted observers to ask, “Is slavery making a comeback with white liberals?”

Free labor and plenty of virtue to signal to your neighbors! As long as none of your free servants turn out to be like Yery Noel Medina Ulloa in Florida, what could go wrong?

[*These illegal migrants are not “refugees,” as officially defined by the United Nations. To qualify as a refugee, migrants must meet specific requirements that these illegals do not. Most have been admitted into the U.S. under the heretofore little-used “humanitarian parole” program, an obvious misuse of the program by the Biden administration.]
