Illegal Crossings from Canada Continue to Surge

We reported here in April that “illegal crossings [are] way up” along our border with Canada, especially in the Swanton sector, which covers parts of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire and is the most popular illegal crossing point along the entire U.S./Canada border. New reports reveal that the surge continues.

On June 1, Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia tweeted that so far in Fiscal Year 2023, agents had encountered more than 3,800 illegal migrants, more than the total from the previous four years combined. In addition, the Patrol estimates that more than 1,800 migrants were known got-aways during that period, bringing the total number of known border crossers this fiscal year to more than 5,600. During just the first eight months of the fiscal year, the total number of apprehensions has increased nearly 25 percent over the previous four years combined.

Much of the illegal traffic in the Swanton sector, which includes–in addition to humans–traffic in drugs, tobacco, and guns, comes through the Akwesasne reservation, an Indigenous reserve that straddles the border. Smuggling has been a fact of life in Akwesasne for a long time, a fact many residents have become comfortable with. As with other sections of the border, the Akwesasne portion is patrolled on the Canadian side by both the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Both are said to be inept at the job, and Akwesasne residents would like to see their own Mohawk militia given the assignment, though the “apathetic” attitude of the populace suggests that would do little to halt the traffic.

The overall problem with Canadian border security is the same problem we have in the U.S.: a lack of will on the part of the central government to do anything about it. Unless and until the will returns, the surge will continue and the borders will become more and more meaningless.
