If You Can’t Beat Them, Become Them

Glenn Loury, a professor at Brown University who maintains a website called “The Black Conservative,” interviewed Professor Amy Wax late in December. Professor Wax, you may remember, has been under fire at her university, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, for some non-pc statements she has made. But that’s not what we’re discussing here.

The subject of this posting has to do with remarks made by Professor Loury himself during the discussion about America’s competition with Asia, as reported by Neil Munro at Breitbart News. Loury believes Americans, of all races, are “laggards,” incapable of competing. The answer, he says, is to import more Asians–in short, to become who you’re competing against. He said:

I think we need these [Asian] people. Let them come. I mean, in fact, that’s the only way we’re going to survive the challenge of the Chinese behemoth going forward another generation or two, because if I look at what’s going on in the legacy population — white and black — of the United States of America, I see a lot of mediocrity, I see a lot of laggardliness. . .

Loury’s arguments did not hold up well under Wax’s counter-arguments, because when she pushed back. . .

Think about what you’re saying. Glenn, we’ve got the whole heartland! We can’t just kind of give up … [on] this whole heartland population, okay? This is the population, the descendants of people that built this country, that conceived this country, that thought of the basic compact and the basic paradigm and the fundamental ideas of this country for a couple of centuries.

. . . Loury seemed to backpedal, admitting:

Maybe if the private sector didn’t have that safety valve of being able to go offshore for their talent, they’d . . . find ways of bringing that human potential out in our domestic population.

Despite his wishy-washiness when confronted, the open-borders ideas Loury initially voiced fit hand-in-glove with the business goals of the Silicon Valley CEOs, which we have frequently pointed out are increasingly native to Asia themselves. As Munro notes later in the same article:

The Indian workplace culture is so ruthless that Indian managers often fire accomplished U.S. professionals so they can sell their jobs to unskilled Indian workers, according to numerous Indians who hope to become U.S. professionals.(Emphasis added.)

America cannot prevail by allowing itself to be transformed by wholesale immigration. In that direction lies only total defeat.

Loury’s discussion with Wax can be viewed on YouTube. Neil Munro’s article is on Breitbart News.
