Hungary to EU: “Let’s stop migration at our borders”

Countering a pro-immigration European Union proposal, the government of Hungary has warned the EU that, instead of making migrants citizens, Europe should protect its borders.

In response to a European Union proposal to naturalize 34 million resident migrants, Zoltán Kovács, a high-ranking member of the Orban government, has posted to the official About Hungary website an article titled “Overshadowed by COVID-19 but on the rise again: illegal migration at 3x last year’s level.” In it he declares:

[I]t’s time again to speak candidly about the increasing pressure on our southern borders.. . . .The elevated pressure on our borders sends a clear signal that the question of migration must be put back on top of the EU’s agenda. Many will recall that last December, the Commission submitted a proposal to bring in some 34 million migrants to become EU citizens. This, they said, would solve the migration situation. Hungary, joined by the countries of Central Europe and the Mediterranean, has a different proposal. Let’s stop migration at our borders and bring help to where it’s needed most.

Kovács notes that “between January and May 20 in 2020, a total of 9,521 illegal border-crossing attempts were thwarted. The same figure for 2021 has more than tripled to 34,899.” He emphasizes that border control efforts by Hungary, such as the 2015 erection of a fence along the country’s borders with Serbia and Croatia, are not only for Hungary’s sake but for that of Europe at large. The fence showed the world that it is possible to stop the influx of illegals on land, while Italy’s efforts in the Mediterranean have demonstrated that migration at sea can be controlled as well.

Instead, he concludes, “Other member states, and most EU institutions, however, seem hell-bent on turning the other way and letting these immigrants in.”
