Hawley Wants Mayorkas to Answer and/or Resign

On October 8, we reported that during the past couple of years, border officials encountered nearly 61,500 illegal border-crossers from “special-interest” nations such as Afghanistan, Egypt,  Somalia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Eritrea, Tajikistan. and Kazakstan. How many of those were released into the U.S. the government didn’t say.

Now Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is demanding that the government come clean. In an October 18 letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, he wrote:

I write with alarm regarding the uptick in potential terrorist-linked illegal aliens encountered at the southern border. . . . As a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, I request that you immediately respond to the following questions to disclose what you know to the American people:
1. How many “special interest aliens” have been released into the United States in the past two years? Please disaggregate the figures by country of origin.
2. What steps has DHS taken to heighten security standards at the southern border following Hamas’ attack on Israel?
3. Is the Department of Homeland Security actively working with the FBI to monitor organizations with links to Hamas’ terrorism activities operating within the United States?

Those are questions that should be answered, but the best answer from Mayorkas would be his acceptance to a recurring demand from Hawley that the Secretary resign. So far, Mayorkas seems to be ignoring all questions and all demands.
