Harris’s Border Visit 800 Miles Off Top Dead Center

Kamala Harris, tapped in March to fix our border problems, is finally going there. Caving at last to repeated calls by Democrats as well as Republicans to visit the border and apparently responding, though she vociferously denies it, to former President Trump’s own scheduled trip the end of June, Harris will visit El Paso today.

So far, that’s not getting many plaudits (except from her boss, who said she has done “a great job so far”). For example, Ted Cruz (R-TX) said:

Ninety-one days ago she was named border czar in charge of the border crisis and she demonstrated strong leadership by doing not a damn thing, by going nowhere near the border, by doing everything she could to hide from the crisis. Now, frankly, that’s the same thing Joe Biden is doing. She’s emulating the president in hiding from the crisis and so suddenly former President Trump is going to the border and they realize “oh crap we gotta do something.” Chicago, Illinois is closer to Washington DC, than El Paso is to McAllen. And so she’s going where the height of the problem isn’t. Kamala, you need to go to the Rio Grande Valley. . . to McAllen. . . to the Donna tent facility, which is the tent city your administration has built that is massively over capacity, that has kids in cages.

And Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), while calling her trip “a first step,” agreed:

I’m sure her planners told her that if you’re going to go down to the border, go to something that’s safer to go to, that is, politically safer. The epicenter is down there in the Lower Rio Grande, the lower part of my district down there. If you look at the numbers that are down there compared to El Paso, you are not going to get a true picture of what’s happening. You go to the Donna facility, you go to Roma, Texas, you go to Rio Grande City, you go to the McAllen area so you can get an idea. That’s how you can get an idea of what’s happening down at the border.

So the veep’s visit will be, say, about 800 miles off the mark. Close enough for government work?
