Denver Mayor Learns Talk Was Cheap

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is not the only big-city mayor in America who’s having second thoughts on just how wonderful unlimited illegal immigration is for his city.

Denver, Colorado, Mayor Michael Hancock, like Adams and virtually all other Democrat mayors around the country, has been vocal about his city’s devotion to open borders and his assurances that his city is “open and welcoming” to all migrants from everywhere. In a recent blog post, Hancock listed the various initiatives Denver has put into place to help the newly arrived illegal migrants, of whom there have been about 7,000 since December. He concluded with the usual Democrat flourish:

Denver is proud to be a city of opportunity for everyone, regardless of where they come from or how they got here. We believe that migrants are not a problem to be solved, but a resource to be celebrated.

That sounds all warm and squishy, but that’s just polspeak. The real truth is found in the city’s actions, not the mayor’s words. A couple of weeks ago, one of those actions was the announcement that, as of May 8–just in time for the May 11 opening of the border floodgates with the demise of Title 42–Denver will no longer provide shelter to those illegal migrants who have not been processed by border officials and received an Alien Registration Number. It seems that the $12.8+ million so far spent on the first 7,000 has turned out to be unsustainable without federal support.

The usual activists are up in arms about Hancock’s alleged betrayal. A representative of the American Friends Service Committee, for example, declared, “Mayor Hancock [is] turning his back. The city, by putting in place this policy, really calls into doubt their commitment to the whole immigrant community.”

Mayor Hancock, like NYC Mayor Adams and so many other Democrat mayors and officials, is learning that lovey-dovey, welcoming talk is cheap. Backing that talk up is not, not by a long shot.
