Del Rio Sector: 800 Illegal Migrants in Two Days; 16,000 This Month

The border town of Eagle Pass, Texas, in the Del Rio Sector, saw 800 migrants illegally cross the Rio Grande in back-to-back days this week. The two groups of migrants, each consisting of about 400 Venezuelan family units and single adults, crossed on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Border Patrol is reporting that large groups of 100 or more are crossing daily. About seven such groups have crossed in the Del Rio Sector in the past week alone. This increased activity has made Del Rio the busiest sector of the U.S.-Mexico border, surpassing the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).

Over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, 4,000 illegal aliens crossed over in Del Rio. So far this month, the total is more than 16,000, while “only” 13,000 have been reported in the RGV, which has lost the top spot it had held since 2013.

The shift in activity from the RGV to Del Rio, whose Border Patrol staff is only one third the size, has placed added strain on the Del Rio CBP, forcing the agency to reduce routine patrols.

As everywhere across the 1,954-mile border, most migrants surrender after crossing and claim asylum. In most cases, this results in their being released into the United States, to await a court adjudication that may never occur.
