The Trump Administration has issued a new rule to help prevent “birth tourism.” Under the current interpretation of the law, anyone born on American soil is automatically granted U.S. citizenship. Some foreigners take advantage of this policy by practicing “birth tourism,” i.e., traveling to this country for the purpose of giving birth to a child so that the child will have the advantages of American citizenship.
Under the new rule, pregnant women applying for travel visas will have to provide a reason for traveling to the U.S., aside from giving birth.
