Biden DHS Gives Ethiopians Effective Amnesty

Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken significant steps to provide “temporary” protection to Ethiopian nationals residing in the United States.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS): The DHS is redesignating and extending the TPS program for over 15,000 Ethiopian nationals who would otherwise be eligible for deportation. This program allows them to:

  • Secure work permits
  • Hold American jobs
  • Be shielded from deportation

TPS provides protection to individuals already present in the US. when conditions in their home country supposedly prevent their safe return. Ethiopians who arrived in the US. on or before April 11, 2024, are eligible for this humanitarian relief.

Special Student Relief: Ethiopians in the US on F-1 student visas can request employment authorization, work more hours during school sessions, and reduce their course load while maintaining F-1 status through the TPS designation period.

TPS was first created under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990 (INA). It prevents federal immigration officials from deporting people from countries experiencing famine, war, or natural disasters. Over time, TPS has effectively become a de facto amnesty program, continuously renewed by various administrations for several countries, even long after the initial hazard had passed.

Since President Biden took office, his administration has significantly distorted the program by vastly extending the number of immigrants eligible for TPS, including those from countries like Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

The recent move to protect Ethiopian nationals reflects the administration’s commitment to providing so-called temporary relief and stability to populations considered vulnerable (or politically advantageous).
