Ag Secretary Pushes Cheap Labor Agenda

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says President Trump will not challenge the status quo of agriculture using illegal aliens for a large share of its workforce. According to Perdue, Trump “understands that there are . . . undocumented [i.e., illegal] immigrant laborers, out here on the farms, many of them that are doing a great job, contributing to the economy of the United States.” He added that sending these illegal aliens home “is not his focus nor will be my focus.”

Breitbart News points out that that these statements ignore the growing potential of mechanization to perform farm work. This transition would be of great social and economic benefit to the U.S., says Breitbart, but agricultural interests prefer the easier route of cheap and abundant illegal labor.
