Volags Sue Government

Volags (voluntary agencies) are organizations that resettle refugees in the United States. They receive large infusions of taxpayers’ dollars to carry out their tasks. Three volags, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Church World Service, and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, are suing the federal government.

They claim that the Trump Administration is violating the Constitution with its proposal to give state governments a say in where refugees are resettled. This is so, they maintain, because states and localities have no authority on issues related to immigration, and that the federal government alone possesses this authority.

This is apparent hypocrisy, says Dan Cadman, a writer for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). All of these volags, he notes, have expressed support for localities and states having “sanctuary” policies for illegal aliens. Those jurisdictions forbid their employees to cooperate with the efforts of the federal government to enforce immigration law.
