Texas to Bus Illegals to Washington, DC

As part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s “Operation Lone Star,” he has ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management to charter at least 900 buses to take illegal migrants to Washington, DC, and drop them off on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Abbott said at a Wednesday press conference:

We are sending [the illegal migrants] to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.

The bus trips would be voluntary, officials said, but Abbott’s announcement threw the open-borders media into the usual tizzy. Rolling Stone magazine said the plan stakes his claim as the “most evil governor in America.”

To further burnish his Most Evil credentials, Abbott also announced Wednesday enhanced safety inspections of all vehicles entering Texas from Mexico, beginning immediately. Those inspections will enforce a “zero tolerance” policy on the entrance of unsafe vehicles into the state. Other enhancements to Operation Lone Star are the proposed use of razor wire to impede low-water crossings and a series of “mass migration” rehearsals to prepare for the expected rush at the border when Title 42 is discontinued on May 23.

(In the Most Evil competition along with Governor Abbott is Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida. The New York Times this week called him as “loathsome as possible” and, in some ways, “worse than Trump.” Wow. DeSantis, for his part, yesterday repeated his proposal to send illegals to “sanctuary states like Delaware,” Joe Biden’s home state. We would argue that to compete with his Texas rival, DeSantis needs to start making good on such proposals.)

The end of Title 42 expulsions is expected, according to Texas Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), to result in a half million migrants crossing the border in the weeks immediately following. “That would be 100,000 people per week,” McCaul told Fox News. [Emphasis added.] “That’s unleashing COVID into the country.” McCaul continued:

As a federal prosecutor down there for many years, I’ve never seen the border this bad. Almost three million people have come in across our southern border since this president was elected. We don’t know who they are.
