Republicans and Dems Back Afghan Path to Citizenship

If Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), along with all the Democrats in Congress, have their way, those +76,000 Afghanis airlifted here last year will soon find themselves on the proverbial Path to Citizenship.

Reuters is reporting that both houses of Congress are considering identical bills that would clear the way to permanent residency for those Afghans admitted either with Special Immigration Visas (SIVs) or, in the case of most of them, on “humanitarian parole.”

The bill, primarily Democratic, does have some degree of bipartisan support–probably at least enough for passage–in both the House and the Senate. In the former, it is co-sponsored by Peter Meijer (R-MI), Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), and Fred Upton (R-MI).  The Senate version was introduced on the Republican side by the ever-dependable (if you’re a Democrat) Graham, Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

One of the Democrat supporters in the House, Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), justified the addition of 76K predictably Democrat voters by doing what they always do–waxing moralistic: “We must keep our commitment to provide safe, legal refuge to those who willingly put their lives on the line to support the U.S. mission in Afghanistan.”

So, although the Afghanistan adventure, especially its finish, was a total humiliation for America, there is a silver lining for the Democrats–and, apparently, for Lindsey Graham.
