A recent Rasmussen poll found that a majority of Americans want less immigration. Legal immigration now runs at about one million a year. The poll asked, “Which is closest to the number of new immigrants the government should be adding each year — fewer than 500,000, 750,000, one million, one and a half million, or more than one and a half million?”
Thirty-six percent said less than 500,000 a year, and 15 percent wanted 750.000 or less, for a combined total of 51 percent wanting less immigration. Only 17 percent wanted to increase immigration to at least 1.5 million a year or more. Seventeen percent wanted to keep the present level, and 15 percent were “not sure.”
