French Court Nixes Referendum

French presidential candidates Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour are patriotic reformers who want to curtail immigration to France. Both promised that if elected they would hold a referendum to allow the majority of French people to express what limits on immigration they want. French elites didn’t like this idea, and France’s constitutional court complied by ruling that a referendum vote would not be valid without Senate approval–an unlikely prospect.

In America, elites also use judges to thwart popular rule. In 1994, Californians voted overwhelmingly for Prop. 187, a measure to deny state benefits to illegal aliens. One federal judge overruled it. In Europe and this country, elites refer to this kind of government as “democracy.”
