64 Million U.S. Residents Don’t Speak English at Home

In 2015, 64.7 million U.S. residents spoke a language other than English at home, according to data from the Census Bureau. Mainly as a consequence of mass immigration, this is double the number in 1990 when 31.8 million spoke another language at home. Furthermore, the 2015 total is almost triple the total of 1980. In terms of percentage, 11 percent of residents in 1980 spoke a non-English language at home, compared with the 2015 percentage of 21.5 percent.

Illegal Immigration Increases

Illegal immigration across the Mexican border is increasing as shown by the Border Patrol's apprehension statistics. In fiscal 2015, the Border Patrol apprehended 331,333 illegal aliens at the border. In fiscal 2016 the total was 408,870, an increase of 23 percent.

Clinton: Limiting Immigration ‘Un-American’

According to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Americans who want to limit immigration are "fundamentally un-American." This statement was from a transcript of her speech in 2013 to the executives of Goldman Sachs recently made public by WikiLeaks. The speech praised the 2013 "gang of eight" legislation as "immigration reform." That measure, which did not become law, would have granted amnesty to illegal aliens and substantially increased legal immigration. Said Clinton in her speech, "What I really resent about the [immigration] obstructionists is that is that they have such a narrow view of America. . . . I don't care what they call themselves. . . . They have to be rejected because they are fundamentally un-American."

U.S. Immigrant Total Exceeds 42 Million

Data from the Census Bureau from 2014 and 2015 show that the U.S. immigrant population (legal and illegal) stands at 42.4 million, the highest total ever in our history. From 2000 to 2014, 18.7 million legal and illegal immigrants settled in the U.S.

Border Apprehensions Less Than DHS Claim

A report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) conceded that only 54 percent of the people illegally entering the U.S. from Mexico last year were caught. DHS has officially claimed that the capture rate was 81 percent. Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) strongly criticized DHS for discrepancy. She stated, "Given that DHS knows these facts, they need to stop pushing misleading measurements that don't show the full picture and create mistrust with the American public."

Mexico Assists Movement of Haitians to U.S.

An internal Homeland Security document reveals that Mexican officials are helping Haitian migrants reach the U.S. by issuing them 20-day transit documents. Six thousand Haitians arrived at the U.S. border during the past year, eighteen times the number who arrived during the previous year. To get there they pay large sums to smugglers. At the border they commonly claim asylum, even though they could have claimed it in Mexico or any of the other countries they traveled through. That strongly suggests that they are economic migrants rather people seeking a haven from persecution.

Court Turns Down Obama Appeal

The Supreme Court rejected the Obama Administration's request to re-hear the case involving President Obama's unilateral decree of amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Previously the Court issued a tie vote on that decree, which allowed a lower court ruling against it to stand. The Court's most recent ruling effectively kills the decree during Obama's term, although the case could come up again later.
