Caravan Now Being Escorted by NG

That caravan, consisting primarily of Venezuelans, that we first reported on here, is now heading up through Mexico with an Mexican National Guard escort. The group, joined this week by African and Haitian migrants, is making its way northward through the state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, to Mexico City. From Mexico’s capital city, the leaders plan to direct the group on to the U.S. border.

Many members of the caravan had been living on the streets of Tapachula, in Mexico’s far south. Those interviewed told reporters they had decided to leave because of unsanitary conditions and a shortage of food and money. One Venezuelan said, “We just want to move forward, to fulfill our American dream and work, because we’re all workers here.”

Although the migrants criticize the Mexican government for providing little assistance, they are now being escorted by members of the National Guard, who direct traffic around them and provide first aid. In addition, Mexico City has complained to Washington about the floating barriers installed on the Rio Grande, which it suggests is in violation of international treaties.

Time will tell what happens if and when the one thousand or so migrants reach the river. Relations between the state of Texas and Mexico have deteriorated recently, prompting deployment of the water barrier. One Texas trooper was quoted as saying that he had been ordered to “push the people back into the water” rather than permit their entry into Texas and the United States.
