Bills Offered to Restore ‘Public Charge’

A group of Senate Republicans has introduced a joint resolution to restore the “public charge” rule for immigrants. Essentially, it denies permanent residence to immigrants who use public assistance. The Trump administration put this rule into effect, but the Biden Administration repealed it.

The lead sponsor of the resolution, Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), observed that “. . . it is fair and sensible to favor prospective new citizens who will not be reliant on government benefits.” Senators cosponsoring the measure: Ted Budd (R-NC), Mike Braun (R-IN), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Mike Lee (R-UT), James Risch (R-ID), and Rick Scott (R-FL).

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) has filed a companion bill in the House. The cosponsors are Reps. Mike Johnson (R-LA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Andy Ogles (R-TN).
