President Biden denied the published claim that his Justice Department is considering payments of up $450,000 as compensation to certain illegal aliens for their arrests. He called the report “garbage,” and said “that’s not going to happen.”
Shortly thereafter, however, his deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden was “perfectly comfortable” with cash settlements of this kind. What he really meant, she maintained, was that he didn’t think the payments would be that high. Another perspective came from ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero: “President Biden may not have been fully briefed about the actions of his very own Justice Department.”
