Two Groups Contend on Immigration

Writing at American Greatness, commentator John Fonte maintains that the issue of immigration involves conflict between two fundamental groups: Americanists and Transformationists. The Americanists believe in traditional American heritage and the principle national interest should guide immigration policy.

Fonte defines Transformationists as “those political, cultural, and ideological forces in America who favor the ‘fundamental transformation’ of the United States. In their view, America has been plagued for centuries by ‘systemic racism’ that remains embedded in our core institutions. Thus, the ‘fundamental transformation’ of the nation is required.” Unchecked mass immigration is their way of bringing this transformation about.
