Dueling Days: Immigrants Day vs Remember the Victims Day

In case you have missed it, today, October 28, is officially National Immigrants Day in the U.S., where every poohbah in the country, grand or small, with a Twitter handle gushes over the gifts provided us by immigrants down the ages.

To participate, or to just take a peek at those endless gushes, fire up Twitter and check out the #nationalimmigrantsday hashtag.

What you might miss in the Twitterstorm is that right around the corner, on November 7, is the National Day Of Remembrance For Americans Killed By Illegal Aliens. That day, somewhat less commonly celebrated by professional Tweetists, was first proposed by the Tea Party Immigration Coalition (TPIC) in 2011 and has been observed yearly since.

As Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) said on the floor of the House of Representatives in 2019:

In 2018, more than 2,000 illegal aliens were apprehended by federal law enforcement officers for homicides committed on American soil. None of these lives would have been stolen from us but for illegal aliens aided and abetted by Democrats who protect, promote and prefer the lives of illegal aliens to the lives of American citizens. As for those who support amnesty and open borders: How many American lives and dreams must be snuffed out by illegal aliens before Washington has the guts and integrity to secure our porous southern border?

The day was most recently proclaimed nationally by President Trump on October 30, 2020, in a proclamation that reads in part:

Americans who are killed by illegal aliens are no longer forgotten, and we are ensuring that they will not have died in vain. Our Nation solemnly stands alongside the mothers and fathers who are no longer able to see their children grow up and have families of their own and for the sons and daughters who have lost a parent or loved one at the hands of someone who never should have been inside our country in the first place.

In response, Mary Ann Mendoza, founder of Angel Families, an organization dedicated to the memory of those victims, said in a statement to Fox News:

There have been many events this past year overtaking the news cycle, but unfortunately the loss of innocent Americans continues to grow daily at the hands of illegal criminals. Securing our borders, not only protects Americans, but protects the vulnerable victims of human smuggling and the cartel.

So while you’re celebrating #nationalimmigrantsday, for a little balance, keep in mind #NationalDayOfRemembranceForAmericansKilledByIllegalAliens. The victims’ families will thank you for it.
