Surge at Sea Escalates

During the past few weeks, Florida Border Patrol agents and their state law enforcement partners have been kept busy intercepting boat after boat of illegal migrants from countries all over the world.

  • In Nov. 19, five migrants drowned and nine more were apprehended after their homemade boat sank about 50 miles offshore from Little Torch Key, Florida.
  • On Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 24-27), Miami CBP agents interdicted more than 180 migrants who had come ashore in eight separate boat landings.
  • On Monday, Dec. 5, a total of 110 Cuban nationals were apprehended in the Florida Keys by CBP and Monroe County law enforcement. The illegal migrants had arrived in three separate landings.
  • On Dec. 6, 33 Cuban nationals were interdicted in the Keys.
  • On Dec. 9, a boat carrying 13 migrants from Romania, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago was intercepted near Palm Beach.

These and more incidents reveal a noticeable upsurge in migrants attempting to enter the United States illegally by sea. No one knows how many boats get through undetected or sink with all passengers on the high seas.
