In the closing hours of 2020, a winter storm spread more than two feet on snow over portions of the border’s Big Bend Sector in west Texas. Unfortunately for at least 50 illegal migrants from Mexico, the smugglers hired to guide them into the U.S. abandoned them to the elements instead. The resulting two-day rescue mission conducted by CBP agents and local law enforcement turned up two migrants dead, and numerous others requiring immediate medical attention in American hospitals.
In a written statement, the CBP said, “This is another example of how human smugglers recklessly abandon individuals leaving them in peril.”
To this, we could add that irresponsible promises and encouragement by American politicians and cheap labor advocates share in the blame by luring the migrants here in the first place.
