In yet another unilateral change to existing law and policy, the Obama regime announced Tuesday that it wants to allow as many as 100,000 spouses of aliens with H-1B visas for “temporary” high-skilled workers to take American jobs. “The proposals announced today will encourage highly skilled, specially trained individuals to remain in the United States…,” said Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, a Chicago billionaire, said the change would help the U.S. attract and keep “world-class” talent working in the U.S. The 85,000 H-1B visas granted each year are among the most sought-after by influential high-tech firms.
While H-1B visa holders are supposed to be filling highly-skilled jobs when Americans are not available, high-tech firms and their immigration attorneys use the program to import foreign workers to hold down wages for U.S. computer software programmers and others. Under the new Obama rule openly designed to encourage these alien workers to remain in America permanently, the spouses would be free to take any American job, for example, working at a cosmetic counter in a department store. The Bureau of Labor Statistics just announced that the rate of labor force participation for Americans between 25 and 29 years old hit a record low in April.
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) blasted the Obama plan, saying it would keep 100,000 Americans from finding jobs. “Fifty million working-age Americans aren’t working,” said Sessions. “Yet the administration is now going to immediately add almost 100,000 new guest workers to compete against unemployed Americans…for struggling Americans it will only reduce wages, lower job opportunities, and make it harder to scrape by.”
