Former acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Mark Morgan said on January 7, “What we’re experiencing now on the southwest border is a complete, utter catastrophe. We have lost control of the southwest border.”
Morgan was interviewed by Charlotte Cuthbertson of The Epoch Times who posted a report on January 9. He told Cuthbertson that during the 2021 calendar year, Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly two million illegal migrants, most of whom were eventually admitted into the U.S. In addition, at least 600,000 migrants “got away” clean, without apprehension.
Of those encountered, 28 percent were Mexican nationals, the lowest proportion in history. Forty-four percent were from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, and the remaining 28 percent were from scores of other countries, including Ecuador, Brazil, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Haiti, and Cuba. Cuthbertson notes that the last figure, double the previous record for that demographic, is particularly troubling because the Department of Homeland Security does not have agreements to electronically verify the nationality of persons from such countries of origin, making removing or expelling them more difficult.
Not that there is a lot of interest on the part of the Biden administration to do so. Biden has systematically dismantled most of the measures put into place during the Trump years to deal with the crisis.
The CDC order known as Title 42, instituted in March 2020 to deal with the COVID 19 pandemic, made it possible to quickly expel illegal migrants back into Mexico. Under Biden, however, Title 42 has been “whittled down—first to allow in all unaccompanied children, then families with children under 7, then most families in general, most single females, and single adults from non-Spanish speaking countries.”
Likewise, Biden has continually attempted, in defiance of court orders, to abolish the MPP (Remain in Mexico) program, used successfully by Trump to mitigate the crisis. Though technically the program has been reinstated, those illegals returned amount to little more than a trickle.
In general, Morgan says, Biden and his DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are creating a “sanctuary country” for illegal immigrants, allowing them to come in and then shielding them from deportation. “They’re trying to totally demolish ICE,” he charged.
For this year and beyond, Morgan predicts the problem will continue to worsen: “There’s no end in sight. There’s none. And this administration, every single day, everything they’re doing is just to get better at releasing people. They’re not trying to stop the flow.”
And the answer as to why is simple: “[T]he open border policies are an intentional move toward more Democratic House seats through redistricting, now that illegal immigrants are counted in the Census. In addition, they expect illegal immigrants to eventually vote Democrat.”
What’s more, “Republicans are also complicit, because they still believe this country needs the illegal workforce.”
Such is what we have for leadership in America today. We have not only lost control of the border. We have lost control of our future.
