Migrants Smuggled Daily on Semis

In the past 10 days, Border Patrol agents in the Laredo Sector along the border in Texas have intercepted nearly 500 migrants being smuggled into the U.S. on tractor-trailers from Mexico.

On Friday, May 28, on Interstate-35 near Laredo, officials found more than 50 migrants hidden in a tanker-type trailer with no ventilation.

The next day, agents at a Laredo checkpoint ordered a driver of a semi to pull aside for inspection. Instead, the driver drove away, resulting in a pursuit along the busy interstate highway. Eventually, the driver abandoned the rig in a median and made his escape on foot.  Agents found more than 100 migrants locked inside the trailer compartment.

Customs and Border Protection estimates that more than two million commercial vehicles enter the United States through Laredo every year, creating a massive potential for wholesale human smuggling. To deal with the problem, the agency works with the Texas Department of Public Safety in a program known as “Texas Hold-Em.” Under that program, a driver caught attempting to smuggle humans or other contraband can have his commercial vehicle license suspended forever.
