Impeachment Vote Fails

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) led an effort in the House to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Greene cited Mayorkas’ systematic sabotage of immigration law enforcement which, among other things, has significantly erased our southern border as a barrier to illegal immigration.

The impeachment failed by a vote of 209-201. Providing the margin of defeat were eight Republicans who voted against the measure. They were Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Patrick McHenry (R-NC) John Duarte (R-C), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Cliff Bentz (R-OR), and Mike Turner (R-OH).

Rep. Buck tried to justify his vote with the claim that “I disagree strongly with how [Mayorkas is] handling the border . . .  I think the border is porous, I think it’s a threat to this country, but it’s not a high crime or misdemeanor, it’s not treason, it’s not bribery, it’s not the crimes or issues our founders set forth in the Constitution.”

So Ken Buck concedes that Mayorkas’ deliberate and lawless actions are “a threat to this country,” but somehow that doesn’t constitute a “high crime” or perhaps even treason. For some Republicans, apparently, it is more important to follow “principles” which always ensue that they will be good losers. Even when the country is at stake, they lack the gumption it takes to win.
